A study conducted by Post Office Money revealed that there is more focus on gardens compared to other home enhancements like extensions, conservatories and kitchens. This is especially the case as we move into the warmer months and leave Winter behind. Finished gardens make for great sales pictures.

Adding a gym was the next biggest price earner at 44%. Then an extension at 37% and walk in wardrobe at 34%.

28% of respondents admitted that “adding value” and “a good investment” were their main motivators for carrying out improvements to their homes.

The study suggests that having a landscape garden can raise the property value by as much as 77%. With the average cost of landscaping a garden being around £3-£5k, that is likely to be a substantial profit.

“Over the past few years, house price growth has slowed, so homeowners have turned to other options to add value to their homes – with improvements being a clear opportunity.”
“Making the right changes to your home can increase its market value significantly – with garden landscaping coming out on top for the most value added.”
“However, home improvements are not all about making changes which add value for re-sale; 63% of the homeowners we polled had no plans to move. Renovations allow homeowners to create homes that reflect their needs and tastes, with the potential added benefit of adding value in the long-term.”

Other considerations of landscape gardens

With the environment being on many people’s minds, and numerous government agendas, one’s own backyard can also be seen as “doing your little bit”. With many people wanting to get back to nature and help species such as bees and butterflies have safe havens, there’s an extra sell to having a ready made garden for these prospects.
